A fire has severely damaged the Kehlsteinhaus near Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps, and authorities have detained a 33-year-old man on suspicion of arson. The update of 24 October concerns an investigation, not a conviction or a final finding on motive.
Bavarian broadcaster BR 24 reported statements by police and prosecutors at a Saturday press conference. Police said they stopped a motorcyclist while travelling toward the fire and that there were indications connecting him to its cause. Investigators were still examining the circumstances. The suspicion of arson remains attributed to the authorities, and the presumption of innocence applies to the detained man.
The building stands 1,834 metres above sea level, which made access and firefighting unusually difficult. BR 24 said no one was found inside and no one was injured. The Associated Press independently reported the blaze, the detention and the complications caused by snow and wind. Police restricted access around the damaged building.
The site, also known as the Eagle’s Nest, was completed during the Nazi period. It has operated as a mountain restaurant since 1952 and contains an exhibition about its history. Bavaria’s interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, said the state-owned building would not simply be left as a ruin and stressed the importance of remembrance work. That statement is an intention to restore the site, not a final construction contract, agreed design or reopening date.
The next stages are to determine how the fire began and how the historic fabric and exhibition can be handled.
